The real-time tracking of a manned mission beyond low Earth orbit puts images, data and explanations into circulation that reach directly the media and, potentially, also the classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humans haven&#039;t traveled this far in over fifty years. <a href=\"https:\/\/ciencia.nasa.gov\/sistema-solar\/artemis-ii-resumen-de-la-mision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artemis II<\/a> It represents a step in the return to lunar exploration with a crew orbiting the Moon and validating systems needed for future missions. Behind this process are decades of research, technological development, and coordination between different agencies and teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how do we integrate current scientific news into the classroom in a meaningful way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the most interesting thing doesn&#039;t just happen in space. <strong>It happens here, in the classrooms. <\/strong>That is why we think it is important to know and explain rigorously what the mission consists of as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stem.org.uk\/all-news\/artemis-ii-returning-humans-to-the-moon-and-bringing-the-journey-into-the\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>pedagogical opportunity<\/strong><\/a> of the first order, transforming interest into learning, and learning into vocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When current events become an educational context<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Space missions have historically had a double dimension: scientific and symbolic. If during the Cold War the space race represented geopolitical power, today programs like Artemis allow us to introduce this perspective through different dimensions. Cooperation between agencies like NASA and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Human_and_Robotic_Exploration\/European_Service_Module_engines_powering_Artemis_II\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the European Space Agency,<\/a> the development of infrastructures such as the European service module or the management of missions in environments of high technological complexity are part of the same system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incorporating this type of content into the classroom implies expanding the questions that are raised. <strong>Why are lunar missions being resumed now? What role do the different actors involved play? What implications does space exploration have in scientific, economic and social terms?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working on Artemis from this perspective allows us to develop a <strong>scientific literacy<\/strong> which goes beyond technical knowledge, analytical capacity, personal judgment and understanding of complex systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From abstract concepts to real problems<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the challenges in teaching STEM disciplines is the gap between content and application. Concepts such as orbit, gravity, energy or radiation are often presented in a decontextualized way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The context of Artemis allows us to approach these concepts from an applied perspective. Orbital maneuvers, life support systems or communication with the spacecraft during the passage through the dark side of the Moon allow us to work on physics, biology, engineering and technology based on a real case. <strong>Knowledge ceases to be an accumulation of content and becomes a tool for understanding and solving problems.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rigb.org\/explore-science\/explore\/blog\/orbit-everyday-8-things-originally-developed-space-travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technologies developed to solve extreme space challenges<\/a> have become part of our daily lives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Them<strong> image sensors<\/strong> that we find today in a large part of the<strong> mobile phone cameras<\/strong> They have their origin in the need to miniaturize equipment for space missions.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Materials such as viscoelastic foam, initially designed to absorb impacts in astronaut seats, are used <strong>today in mattresses and hospital environments<\/strong>s.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Them <strong>infrared thermometers<\/strong>, common in the healthcare field, derive from technologies designed to measure radiation from distant stars.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Glasses with UV protection <\/strong>or cordless vacuum cleaners have direct connections to space research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>References, identity and vocation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/content\/dam\/oecd\/en\/publications\/reports\/2019\/12\/pisa-2018-results-volume-i_947e3529\/5f07c754-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> generation of scientific vocations<\/a> It is linked to referents. Seeing who does science influences the perception of who can participate in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artemis II incorporates a crew with diverse profiles. It participates <strong>Christina Koch<\/strong>, engineer and NASA astronaut, first woman to be part of a manned mission around the Moon. She also participates in <strong>Victor Glover<\/strong>, pilot and astronaut, first racialized person to travel to the lunar environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They complete the crew.<strong> Reid Wiseman<\/strong>, mission commander, and <strong>Jeremy Hansen<\/strong>, Canadian Space Agency astronaut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research in science education indicates that the lack of role models is a barrier, especially for girls and other underrepresented groups. Representation affects expectations and the projection towards scientific studies and careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The spatial dimension in the classroom<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A space mission integrates multiple disciplines that work in a coordinated manner. Integrating these topics into the classroom is not an option, but a necessity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artemis is a clear example of how a scientific event can act as an educational trigger. But the challenge is to systematize this approach: to turn every major current issue into a learning opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This challenge is not just educational. It is also social. The way we understand science, how we communicate it, and how we incorporate it into decision-making affects society as a whole: from schools to organizations and institutions. Are we able to transform this moment into a meaningful educational experience?
